It may be too late, but...
I have a multicolored costume (tiered skirt and gypsy tie top), cotton, from India. It is supposedly tie-dyed, green with burgundy panels, and white dotted patterns throughout both colors.
When I washed it in cold water, the burgundy of course bled into the green and white, darkening those colors...
I've read online (after the fact), that I *should* have washed it in a salt-water mix first *palm-face*.
Is there anything I can do *now* to try and mitigate the bleeding of the burgundy? It's made the outfit look a little dingy... I've read online in general help areas that I could try the salt-water soak, or use a bit of Oxyclean, or...
Suggestions, anyone? Totally a newb when it comes to this sort of thing, and never had to worry about this before, because all my other pieces are solid color...
Hoping someone can help, as it was really pretty before this! :(

| An emerging problem. |
[Nov. 29th, 2009|09:33 pm] |
So, after over a year of dithering, I joined a local tribal bellydance class (Gypsy Caravan style). I've been going a couple of months and I am absolutely ADORING it- I go with a couple of good friends, and the classmates and teacher couldn't be lovelier. However, as the classes go on I'm starting to notice a problem.
I cannot seem to maintain "soft knees". I have to consciously remind myself to do it, and any time the teacher has to correct me it's along the lines of keeping my knees a little bent. I can see quite clearly the problem it's causing- my moves look either a bit delicate and airy-fairy or jerky, when of course I want to be nice and "earthy". I know that I can't expect to be anything close to "perfect" at this early stage but I don't want to start bad habits, so I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if so, they could pass on some tips to help me become a bit more grounded.
Also, if there's any Scottish/UK tribal dancers out there, I'd love to make some friends with the same interest! I feel like I gush about it to everyone and nobody cares, heh. |

| Working with Tulle-bi-telli |
[Nov. 28th, 2009|03:11 pm] |
Does anyone know of a good resource for tulle-bi-telli? I've been looking for fabric with gold metal in it, but I'm warming up to the idea of using silver in black fabric. The only thing I could find are the lengths from Dahlal and a website called Pure Egypt (has anyone ordered from them before)?
Also, does anyone have any experience making costuming with assuit? I could sure use some advice before I undertake my own little fitted garment. |

| New bellydance book "Stomping Ground" out now! |
[Nov. 27th, 2009|07:42 pm] |
Friends -- I'm very excited to announce the release of my new book, "Stomping Ground." It's an examination of the connections between bellydance and spirituality -- I look at historical uses of dance as ritual and then provide exercises you can use to integrate dance into your daily meditational/spiritual practice. This book is a great holiday gift for yourself or the bellydancer on your list. You can order a copy from lulu.com (go here: http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/stomping-ground/6002400) or purchase one directly from me at the next Hands of Kali show.
If you're in the Seattle area, please join me for a book release party at the OK Hotel next Thursday, 12/3, as part of Seattle's monthly Artwalk. We'll have readings from the book, plus bellydance performances by Adderstone and Hands of Kali. Renowned bellydance photographer Sarah Wright (who did all photography for the book) will have her work on display, as will many other wonderful artists. The party runs 7-10pm Thursday 12/3 -- it's free and all-ages. OK Hotel is located under the viaduct at 212 Alaskan Way S.
Thank you! xoxo, Kendra Hayes from Hands of Kali

| the semi-usual |

| | busy | ] | I suppose the usual designation doesn't really apply, as I'm no longer at uni, but it's a similar sort of post, so I imagine it works. Anyway. Heading home for family Thanksgiving; expect scarcity and/or more than my usual degree of scattered-ness until roughly Monday. I'll still be around, just more sporadically than usual. Alex already knows about Sariel-Kirk things, and Saph, I hope you don't mind I tagged in to Yrael's latest? For super slowtime fun? Let me know if you do. As for SouCon folks, Lina will still be around between now and Monday, I just can't promise any great long scenes.
Off I go. Must finish packing and clearing up before my lift gets here. |

| USA drum circle finder |
[Nov. 22nd, 2009|06:33 pm] |
New here... :D http://drumcircles.net/circlelist.html I came across this, it has [decently] regular drum circles listed by state, some are weekly, or monthly, or whatever. Thought it might be good to post here, I know this is a bellydancing site but I think drummings are good places to meet dancers also. IF this is outside the scope of this community mods feel free to delete, Thx :)

| | annoyed | ] | I've neglected LJ for months, but I feel the need to rant.
I DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S HEALTHCARE.
I want to pay for mine and only mine. Selfish? Maybe, but I'm actually getting off my ass to make some money to be able to. Free healthcare is only going to enable those who want to mooch to continue to do so.
Is it just me? Am I the only person in the world that was raised with the notion that 'if you can't pay for something, you can't have it'? I grew up in a poor, single-parent household, knowing that we didn't make much money and I just accepted my lack of new toys. I didn't expect people to give me stuff I didn't earn or deserve. |

I think it's going to be hard, because I think of myself as a person with a somewhat low willpower. Yet I've set goals like this before, and they're never, ever as hard as I think they'll be. Giving up soda for a month was a breeze, maybe giving up this nasty habit won't be too bad either. |
